  •   WS131625 -Sina Ethel Stookesberry b3/27 /1879 -d1951(AncestralRecords) According to Sina, she had a long and painful illness. This poem written by Sina gives insight to her parent’s family. GONE BEFORE by Sina, taken from the book of “Soul Thoughts.” I have loved ones o’er the river Who have only gone before; And they’ll be there to greet me When I reach that shining shore.
  •   The first to go was a brother. God took him young in life To dwell with Him forever Far, far away from strife.
  •   Just three years was another, The brightest one of all, Left with us here to brighten Our world, which has been small.
  •   He was too sweet to linger So Jesus took him away; He seemed most like an angel While with us he did stay.
  •   He is singing now in heaven With that bright angel band, Helping to swell the chorus In that high and holy land.
  •   Then our sister next was taken; Gladly did she leave this world, Glad to have a home in heaven To b e with her blessed Lord.
  •   Often times while she was with us She would stand and fondly gaze At the beautiful sky above her, Then with ecstacy would say,
  •   “Oh, how beautiful is heaven If the sky here is so bright; For that land must be more beauteous, When the Savior is the Light.”
  •   “What a friend we have in Jesus,” How she loved to sing this song! Now she’s gone to be with him, The One she loved so long.
  •   Then another brother left us, Sadly did we see him go, But we know it was God’s will And we to His will must bow.
  •   I’ve been homesick for heaven Ever since he was taken home; And I am longing for the hour When my Lord for me shall come.
  •   But I’m glad the Lord these loved ones Took from this world of care; That their work so soon was finished And they now their jewels wear.
  •   For this life is but a battle; In it we must watch and pray, Fighting Satan and his army As we travel day by day.
  •   And another poem from the same book, “THE LORD’S WILL” describing her own life’s ambitions. I had planned to cross the ocean, Travel to a heathen land; Shout the praise of my Redeemer On the far-off burning sand.
  •   I wanted to stand up bravely In the thickest of the fight, Leading many onward, upward To the ways of truth and right.
  •   I wanted to tell of Jesus, His mighty power to save; How he rose a mightly victor From the darkness of the grave;
  •   How He loved the little children, Blest them as to Him they came- In the midst of the disciples, For a little one made room.
  •   But the Lord withheld my going, Bade me that I should stay; For the little things needed doing That were scattered along my way.
  •   For if only I with patience Would here sweetly lie and wait, I would understand the reason When I entered heaven’s gate.

  •   Quotes from the “History & Road Guide of The Lincoln Highway in OH” by Mike Buettner of Lima,OH -Parts of SECTION 1—EAST LIVERPOOL TO LISBON—16.0 MILES Between East Liverpool and Lisbon, the 1928 route of the Lincoln Highway was very much influenced by the same Appalachian topography that prevailed in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Having to rise from the banks of the Ohio River before winding its way through the hills and hollows of Columbiana County, this section—from an engineering standpoint—may have been the most challenging of all the Lincoln Highway sections built in Ohio.

Out in the countryside of Columbiana County, beyond the junction of State Route 267, the early routes of the Lincoln Highway/U.S. 30 in this section continue to be characterized by change. The first routes of the Lincoln Highway had generally followed the route of Inter-County Highway #12, or Cleveland- East Liverpool Road. This was one of the major routes laid out in 1912 on Ohio’s first map of numbered highways, and had been a corridor of travel for nearly 100 years, connecting the town on the river with the city on the lake. However, there was apparently at least one variation of the Lincoln Highway from that first version of the inter-county highway, because what is now Rollercoaster Road (not shown as part of I.C.H.#12) was once part of the transcontinental route. This road is appropriately named, with its alternating “up and down” grades. Later, what is now the path of Stookesberry Road (which was part of I.C.H.#12) was chosen for the Lincoln Highway route, and it was this route that later inherited the federal designation of U.S. 30. This was a more level route which ran parallel with Patterson Creek, bearing northwesterly from the community of West Point.

The three miles of Stookesberry Road in Elkrun Township apparently included one of Ohio’s two Seedling Miles—the Lincoln Highway Association’s object lesson in concrete. In July 1918, Columbiana County applied to the association for 2000 barrels of cement to improve one mile of a 3.1-mile highway project near Lisbon. The Board of County Commissioners was gracious in expressing their thanks and appreciation to the association, pledging to “use its best efforts to complete the Lincoln Highway in Columbiana County at the earliest possible date.” Ohio’s other Seedling Mile was more than 200 miles away, in Paulding County, on the opposite side of the state—very close to the Indiana line. Between East Liverpool and Lisbon, tourists should watch for blue-on-yellow signs for County Roads 451, 425, and 417, all of which were parts of the Lincoln Highway. In the odometer charts for this section, the scenic Stookesberry Road remnants have been made a part of the charted course, resulting in a temporary departure from U.S. Route 30. To anticipate these diversions, travelers should watch for the standard five-sided yellow-on-blue county road number signs at the various intersections, and not the typical road name signs. In the case of Stookesberry Road, watch for the blue sign with [county road number] 417 in yellow. Directions to Rollercoaster Road, which is nearby, are included in the odometer charts for those tourists who desire to cover every possible alignment of the transcontinental route.

Other remnants and Stookesberry Road, plus two unmarked remnants closer to Lisbon, all became remnants when U.S. Route 30 underwent major reconstruction and realignment, starting in the 1940s. Thus, it can truthfully be said that most of U.S. 30 between State Route 11 (near West Point) and Lisbon is an entirely different road from the one traveled in 1928. Several old remnants are now on private property.

Map from: “History & Road Guide of The Lincoln Highway in Ohio” by Mike Buettner of Lima,OH

A note to Karolyn: I can tell you that I have about 110 newspaper stories from 1914 -1920 when they were paving the Lincoln Highway in Columbiana. They usually referred to the road as the Lisbon -East Liverpool Road. When they wanted to describe that section of the road (where Stookesberry is today) they referred to it in one of three following ways: They would write “the Lisbon -East Liverpool Road near Green’s Hill.” That is the area where Roller Coaster meets present 30. Or “near Patterson Run,” for the little stream nearby. Sometimes they said “the area near Gilmores Stop” because the local trolley stopped very near where Stookesberry now intersects with route 30. I can also tell you that near the turn of the century S. Stookesberry lived in Elkrun Township (the one Stookesberry Road is in) in section 35, in the far southeast corner of the township. This is about 4 miles due east from the road. There was also a W. F. Stookesberry in section 23 of Elkrun, 6 miles north east of the road and neighbor of Albert Stookesberry who lived very close to the little historic restaurant near Elkton (who’s name escapes me at the moment) that has the covered bridge out back.None of them are close to the road, so the reason the road was named Stookesberry is a mystery to me. If I had to take a wild guess, I’d say the Stookesberry’s probably owned much of southern Elkrun and then sold it off. Perhaps the road was named Stookesberry in the mid 1800s. Then they referred to it as Lisbon -East Liverpool Road until 1920 at which time it was exclusively Lincoln Highway. In about 1940 the Lincoln was improved by building the present Route 30 and old Stookesberry Road was no longer called Route 30, so they gave it it’s original name back. Just a wild guess though. Jim Ross

From a 1940 set of plans for the Cleveland-East Liverpool Rd., the following names are at the north end of what is now Stookesberry Road. W.H. & Mary L. Stookesberry, Albert C. & Anna Stookesberry, & Wilmer Stookesberry. Any time one sees several contiguous owners with the same last name like this, it’s a safe bet that the family has been in the area for years. First one comes in, has some sons, divides up the farm when they come of age, etc. It is doubtful that Stookesberry Rd carried that name before 1940, when the relocated US30 effectively rendered a new county road. Her death took place in 1878, at the age of eighty-four, in Olmstead county, MN, at the home of her son, John Dick. She was a woman of very strong character and a sincere Christian, adhering faithfully to the tenets of the Baptist church. There are five of her eight children still living; viz: Harriet, wife of William Stooksberry, a farmer of Randolph county, Indiana; Rhoda [Dick], married to Benjamin Curtis, farmer of Delaware county, Indiana; John, farmer of Minnesota; Elizabeth, wife of L. D. Lambert, attorney, and Dr. Peter B.Dick, a physician. The three deceased were Henry [Dick], the second son, who was a soldier in the Eighty-fourth Indiana infantry, and while on detail duty was killed by a sharpshooter just before the battle of Atlanta; Mary, wife of Hiram Grice, of Jay county, Indiana, died about 1854; Rebecca, the wife of Tate Wright, a merchant of Illinois, died in 1874. (Portrait & Biographical Record, Delaware Co., IN, Originally published in 1894, by A. W. Bowen & Co., Chicago)
  •   Pleasant Hill Church: was established before 1847. Meetings were held at Mr. Constable’s. A frame church was built about 1850, and the present brick house in 1876. Some of the members in 1848 were Lindley, Constable, Isaac Berkhammer, Hugh Woodin, Hiram Grice, Stokesberry and their wives and others. They had preaching once a month and Sunday School every Sabbath, some years summer and winter. There was a good congregation. (History of Randolph County, p144)
